Making a Difference, One Match at a Time

The Big Sisters mentoring program matches Lower Mainland female-identifying, non-binary, and transgender youth (ages 7-17) with a volunteer Big Sister in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.

For a minimum of 1 year, each Big and Little match meets once a week for 2-4 hours. Matches enjoy doing a wide variety of free and low-cost activities together including crafts, sports, movies and just hanging out and talking!

Our volunteers are age 19 or older and provide us with a criminal record check and references. They’re trained in child safety and screened and monitored by our professional staff throughout their involvement with the program.

Different Perspectives

Mentee Sierra’s Dad was feeling overwhelmed as a single parent, and is grateful for the different experiences that her Mentor, Lorraine has been able to provide. “I don’t know a lot about womanly stuff, so Lorraine does, and from my perspective, this has been an incredible thing to have. I can’t be the only one out there as a single parent, with a single child. Between work, cooking, cleaning, laundry, housework and of course to give your child an experience that you don’t have the time or can’t do.”

Increased Confidence

A parent of one of our littles noticed the difference in their teenagers confidence after confiding in their Big Sister “My teenage daughter often confides in her Big Sister when faced with big decisions eg. Dealing with her anxiety, school issues or what to do if someone offers her drugs. Following these discussions, my daughter seems more sure of her own decisions in conversations at home”

Part of the Family

Sandy, a mom of one of our littles, now considers her daughter’s Big Sister as a permanent part of her family. “Big Sisters has given my daughter a better chance at success, it has given her a True big Sister that we consider family now.”

Someone to Lean On

One of our mentees, Shirya, is grateful for the addition of her Big Sister, even though she has two sisters who she often goes to for help. “My Big Sister’s best quality is that she always listens and gives good advice. Even though I have two sisters, sometimes I can’t talk to them about everything. So, it’s good to know that I have someone else to talk to. Every time I have a problem, I come to her.
