Canada Summer Job – Social Services Volunteer Coordinator

Position Summary 

The Social Services Volunteer Coordinator supports the Volunteer & Community Engagement Lead in strengthening Big Sisters’ volunteer programs and community connections. This role assists with volunteer recruitment, onboarding, recognition, and engagement initiatives, as well as outreach activities and event coordination. It’s an ideal opportunity for a student interested in community development, volunteer management, and nonprofit work to gain hands-on experience while empowering girls and gender-diverse youth across the Lower Mainland.

What you will be doing:

Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement

  • Assist with outreach and posting of volunteer opportunities across platforms.
  • Support the coordination of volunteer inquiries, applications, and onboarding processes.
  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date volunteer and client records and contact lists in the database.
  • Support communication with volunteers and clients through e-newsletters, emails, and appreciation messages.
  • Contribute to developing and implementing volunteer recognition initiatives and events.

 Community Engagement & Events

  • Support the planning and coordination of community engagement events and outreach activities.
  • Help build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, and local businesses.
  • Assist in coordinating logistics for volunteer and community events (venue booking, materials prep, registration, set-up/tear-down).
  • Support data collection, surveys, and reporting to evaluate engagement initiatives.

Administrative Support

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for volunteer and community engagement initiatives.
  • Maintain organized digital and physical files related to volunteers, clients, partners, and events.
  • Assist with scheduling, note-taking, and coordination of meetings or team activities.
  • Ensure materials and resources for volunteer engagement are up-to-date and accessible.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Volunteer & Community Engagement Lead, Programs team, and Marketing & Communications to support outreach initiatives.
  • Participate in staff and program meetings as required.
  • Contribute to a welcoming, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
  • Assist with other Programs and agency activities as needed, including supporting events, camps, workshops, and special initiatives.
  • Offer ideas and suggestions to enhance Big Sisters programs, activities, and community engagement efforts.

What you bring:
Education & Experience

  • Looking to enter post-secondary, currently enrolled or a graduate in the social services field
  • Some post-secondary education in child & youth development, outdoor education/recreation, education, social work, or a related field
  •  1-3 years of experience with a youth-focused community service provider, direct program delivery experience, a strong asset
  • 1-3 years of experience in child & youth education (before & after school care, summer camp, tutoring, etc)
  • 1-3 years of experience planning engaging activities for youth from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic cultural backgrounds
  • 1-3 years of experience in group leadership, facilitation, and training
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child & youth development, community-based programs, and provincial support systems
Other Skills/Knowledge/Experience
 
  • A clear Criminal Records Check, including Vulnerable Sector (cost will be covered by BSBCLM if candidate does not have a recent CRC)
  • Fluency in English, additional language(s) a strong asset
  • Computer literacy, experience using Microsoft Dynamics, a strong asset
  • Up to date First Aid certificate includes CPR (Standard First Aid preferred)

This position:

This is a full-time (35 hours/week) contract position, based in our Vancouver office on Joyce Street, directly across from the Joyce SkyTrain station. The role requires five working days per week, with a minimum of one day in-office. A Criminal Records Check (including a vulnerable sector search) is required as this is a condition of employment required by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada. The expected start date is the week of May 10.
