Women’s History Month Spotlight: Sara, Study Buddy Mentor

At Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, our mentors create space for learning, connection, and growth, reminding youth they are not alone in the world. This month, as we celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on Sara, a Study Buddy mentor who has been volunteering since February 2021.

“It is special to feel like you have contributed in a small way to a young person’s life.”

Since joining Big Sisters, Sara has dedicated her time to helping her mentee build confidence and grow both personally and academically, creating a connection that continues to make a lasting impact.

A Friendship That Started on Zoom

Sara began mentoring during a time when meeting in person wasn’t possible, and most sessions happened over Zoom. The first in-person meeting happened by chance at a public library.

“The first time we met in person was by accident at a public library. It was funny at first, recognizing the family, but then there was so much excitement for all of us to be together. It was special to see how happy my mentee and her family were to see me, and I was happy to see them too.”

Watching Growth and Building Confidence

For Sara, one of the most rewarding parts of mentoring is seeing her mentee grow.

“I really love being there to see my mentee become the person she is becoming. It’s special to feel like you’ve contributed in a small way to a young person’s life. The bond we have makes every session meaningful, whether it’s over Zoom or in person.”

Mentorship also gives Sara a sense of community and the chance to give back in a meaningful way.

“It’s about feeling part of a community. I had so many adults in my life who guided me when I needed it, and being able to pass that support on is really special. Spending time with my mentee also makes me happier and healthier as an adult. It reminds me to slow down and not take things so seriously.”
