Big Sisters Launches Pumped for Post-Secondary, the First Program of Its Kind in BC
High school is full of big questions, and no one should have to figure out what comes next on their own. Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland is excited to introduce Pumped for Post-Secondary (PFPS), a new pilot program and the first of its kind in British Columbia.
PFPS is a group-based mentoring program designed to help high school students explore post-secondary pathways with confidence, guidance, and support, especially those who may not otherwise have access to these opportunities.
Connecting Students with Mentors and Opportunities
PFPS pairs high school students in Grades 9 to 12 with current post-secondary student mentors in a group-based program running from January to April at Langara College. Through guided mentorship, hands-on workshops, and campus experiences, students gain a clearer understanding of what life after high school can look like.
Participants have opportunities to:
- Explore campus resources such as counselling, financial aid, and accessibility supports
- Take part in mock lectures, resume workshops, and day-in-the-life experiences
- Connect with post-secondary student mentors who share their experiences and insights
“PFPS gives students a real opportunity to explore post-secondary life, gain confidence, and develop skills that will support them long after high school,” says Nasrin Ali, Manager of Post-Secondary Program at Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland.
Building Confidence and a Sense of Belonging
Beyond practical skills, PFPS helps students see themselves in post-secondary spaces. Mentors provide encouragement, answer questions, and guide youth as they navigate new environments. By the end of the program, students not only understand post-secondary life but experience it firsthand.
“When these young people step onto our campus, they experience the close-knit community and supportive pathways that define who we are,” says Dr. Debbie Schachter, Associate Vice-President, Students at Langara College. “They meet mentors who cheer them on, share their stories, and help them see what is possible.”.
Why Mentorship Matters
PFPS strengthens students’ readiness for post-secondary education while offering mentors meaningful leadership and facilitation experience. With staff support, mentors are able to engage in ways that are impactful and manageable. For students, the program opens doors to new networks, skills, and confidence that can shape their academic journeys and future goals.
Get Involved
The pilot program is running at Langara College with 11 sessions that combine mentorship, skill-building, and hands-on campus experiences. High school students, post-secondary mentors, and community partners are encouraged to get involved.
