Women’s History Month Tribute: Honourary Advisory Board

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we honor the people who have shaped Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. Our supporters do more than guide the organization—they become champions, advocates, and role models, helping create opportunities and inspire the youth we serve.

This month, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on our Honourary Advisory Board (HAB), a group of dedicated leaders who represent Big Sisters in many ways. Many are also Big Sisters themselves, mentoring youth while contributing their expertise, time, and energy to strengthen our programs. Their care and commitment make an obvious impact, and their guidance helps shape the organization’s future.

“A stalwart commitment to values. It’s realized through creating relationships in a world where we so desperately need real and genuine connections.” – Heather Hesson, Honourary Advisory Board

Building on a 65-Year Legacy

Big Sisters began 65 years ago with a small group of women who understood the power of mentorship. Linda Parsons, Former Big Sisters Board Chair and Big Sisters, recalls starting in an old storefront on Main Street and later moving to a heritage house that became a home for connection and community.

Carmen Thériault, Unleashing Potential Campaign Co-Chair and Former Big Sister, highlights the recent mentorship hub as a game changer. The hub allows Bigs and Littles to meet, study, cook together, and engage in educational programs—a space designed to bridge the gap between what youth have and what they need to reach their potential.

“Getting here took a whole team of people with different strengths, different skills, different resources, and different connections to bring to the table.” – Carmen Thériault, Unleashing Potential Campaign Co-Chair and Former Big Sister

Champions of Mentorship and Community

HAB members, including Margot Jagger, Co-Chair Honourary Advisory Board, Roxana Colquhoun, Co-Chair Honourary Advisory Board, and Lisa Ethans, Honourary Advisory Board, have been instrumental in guiding Big Sisters’ mission. Their collective focus is on mentorship, community support, and ensuring youth have access to opportunities that foster confidence, independence, and growth.

“More committed individuals who want to make a difference in the life of a young person. More people talking about us out in the community telling our story.” – Margot Jagger, Co-Chair Honourary Advisory Board

“Really never giving up on the cause. The impact of Big Sisters is huge, and that is what has kept me involved over the years.” – Lisa Ethans, Honourary Advisory Board

Looking Ahead

The Honourary Advisory Board is not just about reflection—they are driving the organization forward. Their involvement ensures that Big Sisters will continue to expand programming, reach more youth, and create lasting impact.

“Supporting the community and empowering the next generation. It all comes down to the human level.” – Roxana Colquhoun, Co-Chair Honourary Advisory Board

With their guidance, Big Sisters is poised to double the number of youth served by 2029, ensuring mentorship reaches even more girls and gender-diverse youth across the province.

A Lasting Impact

The members of HAB are a blessing to Big Sisters. Through their mentorship, advocacy, and leadership, they’ve left an indelible mark on the organization and the lives of countless youth. We are grateful for their dedication and proud to celebrate their contributions this Women’s History Month.
