Volunteer Spotlight: Shela, My Voice, My Power! Mentor
September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, a time to celebrate the mentors who make a lasting difference in the lives of young people. At Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the volunteers who show up with care, consistency, and heart.
This month, we’re highlighting Shela, a dedicated My Voice, My Power! (MVMP!) mentor who joined the program in January 2025. Since then, she has been a steady source of encouragement, creating safe spaces where youth can feel seen, heard, and supported.
Standout Moments
One moment that stands out for Shela came when a mentee confided in her about feeling out of place after moving to a new school. By offering empathy and reassurance, she helped them navigate the transition and witnessed a beautiful transformation.
“What made this moment especially memorable was seeing them open up to their peers after and become increasingly comfortable with the group.”
Why Mentorship Matters
For Shela, the joy of mentoring lies in watching youth learn, explore, and grow. She’s often inspired by their unique perspectives and enjoys the knowledge-sharing that naturally unfolds between mentors and mentees.
To her, mentorship is about being a safe space: “Whatever expression they choose, as long as it’s authentic and brings them joy, it is real, valuable, and okay.” She knows that for many young people, having someone consistently affirm their worth can be life-changing.
Ready to Become a Mentor?
Shela’s story is a reminder that mentorship is not just about guidance. It is about building trust, fostering confidence, and celebrating authenticity.
The My Voice, My Power! (MVMP!) Program is a group mentoring initiative for youth in grades 7–10 that helps participants build confidence, explore identity, and strengthen their sense of belonging. Through creative activities, guided discussions, and supportive mentorship, youth are encouraged to embrace their authentic selves in a safe and inclusive space.
