Volunteer Spotlight: Nester, Big Sisters Mentor

At Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, our mentors do more than show up. They become a steady source of encouragement, care, and inspiration for the youth they support.

This month, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on Nester Chen, a longtime volunteer who has been making a lasting impact for over 10 years through our Big Sisters Mentorship Program. From one-on-one hangouts to co-leading workshops and celebrating big wins, Nester’s journey is filled with powerful moments of growth for both her and her mentee.

“It’s truly been an honour to support Big Sisters’ mission and be a small part of the amazing work they do to uplift youth.”

Moments That Last a Lifetime

With more than a decade of mentorship behind her, it’s hard for Nester to choose just one standout memory. A couple of recent moments stand out.

Earlier this year, she and her mentee co-led a financial literacy workshop together. After weeks of research, preparation, and a practice run, her mentee confidently led the presentation in front of her peers.

“She absolutely nailed it! I was so proud of the initiative she took.”

That same confidence was on full display again when her mentee applied for the Bright Futures Education Fund, speaking with poise and professionalism during her interview.

“Even over a virtual screen, it was powerful. I genuinely wanted to shout, ‘You go girl!’ from the rooftops.”

The Power of Showing Up

When asked what she enjoys most about being a mentor, Nester’s answer is simple but profound:

“You don’t have to share DNA to share love.”

Over the years, their bond has grown into something that feels more like family. It’s the trust, the shared experiences, and the growth on both sides that make mentorship so meaningful.

To Nester, mentorship is about passing on what you’ve learned, but just as importantly, it’s about being consistent.

“It’s about showing up even on days when you’re tired or overwhelmed, because someone is counting on you to be a steady presence in their life.”

Ready to Become a Mentor?

Nester’s story is a reminder that mentorship isn’t just about giving back. It’s about growing together. If you’re looking for a way to build meaningful connections and support the next generation, becoming a mentor might be the perfect fit.
