#MatchGoals: Practicing Kindness Together

1. Why did you want to become a Big

Growing up I had a very close relationship with my older cousin. She was like a big sister to me and was a very positive influence in my life. I also work as a pediatric nurse and enjoy spending time with kids. Both of these things lead me to Big Sisters. I first volunteered with Go Girls! but then wanted a more long term connection so decided to become a Big

2. Tell me about your match. What do you do together?

My Little Sister and I have been a great match, we have many common interests and enjoy being outside, baking, swimming, and sewing together.

3. What is your favourite thing about your Little?

She is so much fun! She always comes up with great ideas such as cooking competitions or frisbee contests.

4. What is your favourite memory together?

My Little Sister came up with the idea to give out food to the homeless. We made lunch bags including sandwiches and snacks, then handed them out. Everyone was so kind and thankful for the lunches, and seeing her interact with them was so cool!

5. Has your perception of yourself and/or what you’re capable of changed since being matched? If so, how?

I think it has been pretty cool to see the difference you can make in a child’s life. I will suggest something to my Little or we will talk about something (for example doing random acts of kindness) and then her parents will report all these nice things that she has been doing!

6. Why should people volunteer for Big Sisters?

First off, it’s really fun! There are so many things I have done with my Little that I wouldn’t do unless I was with her. You get to act like a kid and try so many new things. It also feels pretty great to have a young person look up to you and take your advice! I know that I grew up a more rounded and balanced person having positive influences like my cousin and I hope I can do the same for her.
