Celebrating International Women’s Day 2025: Strength in Every Story
International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, is a global occasion to recognize and honor the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender parity worldwide. The theme for IWD 2025 is “Accelerate Action”, emphasizing the urgent need to advance gender equality across all sectors.
In Canada, the Government has adopted the theme “Strength in Every Story” for IWD 2025, highlighting the importance of amplifying the voices of all women, particularly those who continue to face barriers to success. This theme underscores that every woman’s story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of opportunity.
The Power of Mentorship in Advancing Gender Equality
Mentorship plays a pivotal role in empowering women and fostering gender equality. Organizations like ours have been instrumental in providing mentorship opportunities that ignite the potential in girls, non-binary, transgender, and gender-diverse youth. Celebrating its 65th anniversary, we continue to support young individuals through various programs, including Big Sisters, Study Buddy, and group mentorship initiatives.
Mentorship not only benefits the mentees but also enriches the mentors, creating a reciprocal relationship that fosters growth, learning, and inspiration for both parties. By sharing their experiences and guidance, mentors help mentees navigate challenges, build confidence, and achieve their goals. This process contributes to the broader movement of accelerating action toward gender equality.
How You Can Get Involved
As we observe International Women’s Day 2025, it’s crucial to recognize the collective responsibility in advancing gender equality. By participating in local events, supporting mentorship programs, and sharing stories of resilience and success, we can contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society.
In Vancouver, several events are planned to commemorate IWD 2025. One notable event is the International Women’s Day March, scheduled for Saturday, March 8th, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square (Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza). This march aims to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for continued progress toward gender equality. Learn more here
