International Mentoring Day: Celebrating the Power of Mentorship and Connection

Today, January 17, is International Mentoring Day—a moment to celebrate the meaningful relationships at the heart of mentorship and the community that makes them possible at Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. For generations, mentorship has been at the heart of our mission—creating safe, supportive spaces where girls and gender-diverse youth can feel confident, develop life skills, and discover what they’re capable of.

Mentorship is about being there listening, showing up, and growing together over time. It’s built on trust and connection, creating moments of joy, learning, and belonging for both mentors and mentees. Every mentoring relationship is unique, but each one is rooted in care, consistency, and the belief that young people thrive when they feel supported and seen.

This month on our social media, we’ll be sharing stories and moments that capture the heart of mentorship—the relationships, growth, and connections that make it so powerful.

How Mentorship Makes a Difference – Meet Haleluya, Study Buddy Mentee

Watch Haleluya’s story to see how, with the support of her Big Sister through the Study Buddy program, she gained confidence, strengthened her academic skills, and found space to explore her creativity and voice.

Haleluya’s story is one of many. Across our communities, there are many more girls and gender-diverse youth who are still waiting for a mentor—someone who can help change their lives through connection, care, and consistent support.

As we reflect on the lasting impact of mentorship and the relationships built over time, we’re also looking ahead. The need for mentorship continues to grow, and so does our commitment to expanding access and creating more meaningful matches across the Lower Mainland.

If you’ve ever considered becoming a mentor, there’s no better time than now. By sharing your time, support, and care, you can help build brighter futures—one mentoring relationship at a time.

How You Can Support Mentorship

On International Mentoring Day January 17, we’re inviting you to support Big Sisters in ways that feel right for you.

By volunteering your time and expertise as a mentor, you can make a meaningful difference in the life of a young person through consistent, caring support.

By donating to Big Sisters, you help our team connect girls and gender-diverse youth with the mentors they need to grow, build confidence, and thrive.

Together, we can empower the next generation to dream big and reach their full potential.
