This December, we’re celebrating the quiet, powerful moments that mentorship makes possible, moments that help young people feel seen, supported, and capable of more than they ever imagined.

A mother’s story reminds us why mentorship matters, offering a glimpse into her daughter’s journey from struggle to confidence.

Her daughter struggled both academically and socially. Learning challenges and ADHD made every school day feel heavier than the last. She came home discouraged, overwhelmed, and unsure of herself. As a parent, she watched her daughter’s confidence slip away and felt helpless, wanting so badly to ease her burden but not knowing how.

Then they found Big Sisters, and her daughter was matched with a Study Buddy.

From the very beginning, her mentor became a calm, reassuring presence, someone who showed up with patience, warmth, and unwavering belief. She encouraged her through the hard moments, helped her navigate friendships, and reminded her consistently, that she was capable and worthy.

Slowly, things began to change. Her daughter started trying again. Smiling again. Believing again.

Today, she walks into school with more confidence. Her grades are improving, yes – but the real transformation is in how she sees herself: brave, valued, and capable of so much more than she once believed.
