Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2025: Volunteers Make Waves

This National Volunteer Week (April 27–May 3), we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who make waves across Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland.

Whether it’s Study Buddy mentors helping youth unlock a love of learning, Big Sisters fostering confidence and resilience, or group mentoring volunteers leading impactful programs like Go Girls! and My Voice, My Power!—you are at the heart of everything we do.

Behind the scenes, our Activities Committee, Alumni Committee, event volunteers, Board of Directors, and Honourary Advisory Board members are creating meaningful experiences and inclusive spaces for our community to grow and thrive. Every moment you give makes a difference—and it all starts with showing up.

Last year, 315 volunteers contributed over 36,000 hours across our four core programs—and that’s just the beginning. Many more continue to show up in countless other ways, offering time, leadership, expertise, and heart. Together, you are the wave that carries our mission forward.

The Power of Mentorship

This year’s theme, Volunteers Make Waves, speaks to what we see every day: one consistent presence, one shared moment, one voice of encouragement—can create a ripple effect that changes the course of a young person’s life.

Because when volunteers show up, young people thrive.

Throughout the week, we’ll be spotlighting volunteers—including one of our newest mentors, Matida, who was once a Little Sister herself—and sharing stories that highlight the lasting impact of mentorship.
