International Volunteer Year 2026: Celebrating Community, Connection and Impact

In 2026, the world will recognize something we see every day: volunteers strengthen communities.

The United Nations has named 2026 the International Volunteer Year 2026 (IVY 2026), a global recognition of the individuals who contribute their time, skills, and care to build more resilient and connected societies. At Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, this moment closely reflects who we are and how we serve. Our programs are built on the dedication of volunteer mentors who show up consistently for young people across our region

What Is International Volunteer Year 2026?

International Volunteer Year 2026 highlights volunteerism as a vital force for community wellbeing and sustainable development. The United Nations is calling on governments, nonprofits, and institutions to strengthen how volunteer contributions are supported, recognized, and sustained.

The focus includes:

  • Strengthening systems that support volunteer engagement
  • Recognizing and measuring the value of volunteer contributions
  • Promoting inclusive and innovative approaches to volunteerism

In Canada, Volunteer Canada is leading a national campaign that invites people to reconnect with their communities and discover meaningful ways to contribute. The message is simple: there is a place for everyone in volunteerism.

Why Volunteerism Matters Now

Volunteerism is evolving. Across Canada, participation patterns have shifted, yet community needs continue to grow. International Volunteer Year arrives at an important time, reminding us that volunteering is more than service. It creates connection, reduces isolation, and strengthens the social fabric that holds communities together.

Volunteers support youth, seniors, families, and community programs. They fill critical gaps and offer something equally powerful: steady presence and human connection. At its heart, volunteerism builds communities that are inclusive, compassionate, and resilient.

The Impact of Volunteer Mentors at Big Sisters

At Big Sisters, volunteers are the foundation of our mentorship programs. Their time, care, and consistency shape the experiences of hundreds of young people each year.

In the past year alone:

  • 574 girls and gender diverse youth were served across the Lower Mainland
  • 320 youth were reached through group programs
  • 35,254 total volunteer hours were contributed
  • 211 new volunteer applications were received, a 33 percent increase
  • 48 youth received support through the Bright Futures Education Fund

These numbers represent more than participation. They reflect conversations after school, encouragement before exams, guidance through life transitions, and steady support during uncertain moments. Because of our volunteers, more young people are building confidence, strengthening relationships, and moving toward their futures with greater self belief.
