Volunteer Spotlight: Julia, Go Girls! Mentor

At Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, our mentors help create spaces where girls and gender diverse youth can build confidence, try new things, and feel supported. This month, we’re shining a light on Julia, a Go Girls! mentor who brings lived experience, warmth, and genuine care to every session. She joined the program as a mentor in April 2025, but her connection to Go Girls! started long before that.

“I participated in the program as a mentee back in grade 8. The lessons I learned and the memories I made have stuck with me for years, and I wanted to help keep the program going for future generations of girls.”

Full Circle Moments

One moment from Julia’s first semester still stands out. During the final session, the group did an activity where each participant wrote something kind about every other person. Watching the girls take their time to write thoughtful, insightful messages was a reminder of how much they notice and appreciate about one another.

“It was heartwarming to see how much effort they put into their cards. I am consistently in awe of the intelligence and perspective I get to witness.”

These moments show what group mentoring can do. When youth feel supported and included, they begin to lift each other up in meaningful ways.

Watching Confidence Take Shape

Julia loves seeing how much a group can grow in just eight weeks. Early sessions can feel quiet, with girls who are shy or unsure of themselves. By the end, they speak more openly, share their ideas, and take part in discussions with confidence.

She also appreciates the sense of community that forms within each group. Being part of that shared energy, not only with mentees but also with fellow mentors, has been one of the most rewarding parts of her experience.

What Mentorship Means

For Julia, mentorship is about creating a space where youth can be fully themselves. It is not about being perfect. It is about showing up with consistency, kindness, and authenticity.

“Mentorship means providing a relationship and environment where mentees feel free to speak their mind. It means championing our girls as they explore their thoughts, challenge their ideas, and let themselves be silly. All parts of them should feel welcome.”

Ready to Become a Mentor?

Julia’s story reflects what makes Go Girls! such a powerful program. It gives youth the chance to learn, build confidence, form friendships, and feel supported by mentors who show up for them.

The Go Girls! Program supports girls and gender diverse youth in grades 4 to 8 through active living activities and health based discussions that nurture self-esteem, healthy habits, and connection.
