Board of Directors, Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland

The Opportunity

Board Directors contribute to the governance, strategic guidance and oversight of the organization to ensure resources are in place to support management execute its operational and program objectives. To best support the diversity of competencies and skills required at the board level, candidates with demonstrated experience and skills in one or a combination of the following areas are required:

  • Human Resources: Experience with executive performance management and compensation, benefit plans and risk management.
  • Legal: Understanding of and ability to apply relevant legislation as it relates to the agency’s mandate and/or related to Canadian labour laws.
  • Philanthropy: Experience and willingness to act, inspire and mobilize others via community connections, and influential community leadership.
  • Public Policy, Advocacy and Government Relations: Experience with the workings of government and the development of public policy in different levels of government.

Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland is committed to strengthening its Board of Directors by seeking Board Directors who reflect or understand the communities we serve. Past or current involvement with Big Sisters is considered an asset. Previous board experience is beneficial.

Expected Time Commitment

The term of appointment is two years for a maximum of four consecutive years totalling eight years.

Board Directors must be willing and able to devote the time and effort necessary to fully participate in the governance of the organization. Typically, the Board of Directors meets quarterly with an additional full-day planning and development session. Board Directors are also required to serve on Board Committees that are required to meet at minimum once a quarter.

The Board Governance and Nominating Committee members will conduct telephone and in-person interviews with selected individuals. Following interviews, the Board Governance and Nominating Committee will notify successful candidates that they will be recommended to the Board of Directors for approval in September 2019.  Big Sisters is grateful for all expressions of interest, however will only be following up with those applicants we feel best align with our current needs.
