Step 1. General Information

The Study Buddy program is a weekly one-to-one mentoring relationship that focuses on school work. Little Sisters in this program not only improve their academics but also report a higher level of self-esteem.This program is for girls who need academic assistance and cannot access other tutoring services due to financial constraints.

The program requires one tutoring session per week (1 hour) for a minimum 6 month commitment. Sessions take place at a mutually-agreeable location (e.g. library) after school or on weekends. The program runs through the summer depending on the needs of the Little Sister and the match’s summer schedule. We encourage our new matches to continue to meet over the summer because even if they aren’t working on homework, they’re building a stronger connection.

The program strives to do the following:

  • Provide an academic role model to girls ages 7-17
  • Increase educational performance
  • Promote the importance of staying in school and increase school attendance
  • Enhance educational goal setting
  • Decrease disruptive behaviour in school

Study Buddies work together to set appropriate educational goals for the Little Sister. With the support of a Study Buddy tutor, Little Sisters are encouraged and equipped to improve their educational performance and meet their academic goals, which contributes to their overall self-esteem.

Step 4. Next Steps

You will receive a confirmation email when you submit your application. Your application will be processed and your references contacted within 2-4 weeks. Once all your references are complete, we will be in touch to register you for a upcoming training session. We hold our training sessions at our Vancouver location to make use of the cost free space we have. After you attend training and your (and, if applicable, your live-in partner’s)  CRC is complete, your caseworker will schedule an in-person interview with you.

Finally, your application will be reviewed for acceptance. Once accepted, we’ll begin finding a Little Sister for you. We try to match you with a girl who lives in your city. Your caseworker will provide you with on-going support and check-ins during your match.
