Big & Little Sister Program

Match Photo2The Big & Little Sister program matches Lower Mainland girls (ages 7-17) with a volunteer Big Sister in a one-to-one mentoring relationship. For a minimum of one year, each match meets once a week to spend 3-5 hours together. Matches enjoy doing a wide range of activities together including making crafts, playing sports, watching movies, and just hanging out and talking!

Research has shown that a warm, supportive relationship with a caring adult is a key factor in helping children overcome challenges in their lives over which they often have no control. We believe that each Little Sister benefits from the relationship formed with a caring, supportive woman and, in the long term, gains self-esteem and confidence to make positive life choices.

Our Big Sisters
are women over the age of 19 who commit to spending 3-5 hours once a week for a minimum of one year with their Little Sister. Big Sister volunteers are screened by qualified professional staff counsellors and they receive training and ongoing support throughout their match. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT BECOMING A BIG SISTER

Our Little Sisters are girls between the ages of 7 and 17 who are interested in developing a friendship with a caring woman. Little Sisters can be referred to this program by parents, school counsellors, social workers, or other helping professionals. Many Little Sisters suffer from low self-esteem, social isolation, and a lack of enriching experiences.  As a result of poverty, family distress, abuse, loss or disability, many Little Sisters face overwhelming challenges. Just having someone to listen to them, have fun with them and tell them they are special can make a tremendous impact on these young girls. FIND OUT HOW TO REFER A LITTLE SISTER

What people are saying about the program...
“One of the best things my daughter’s Big Sister does is listen to my daughter without the critical ear of a parent. She is an older friend my daughter can look up to with out being let down. Because my daughter gets such a boost when she sees her Big Sister, we get along better too.” – parent of a Little Sister

“The best thing about having a Big Sister is that I now have a very close friend to share my feelings and thoughts with. I no longer have to keep it all to myself. I love this program!" – Little Sister

“The best thing about being a Big Sister is knowing that I am giving my Little Sister a secure friendship when her world is unstable.” – Big Sister volunteer
